If an adventure honeymoon with a large dose of romance is what you’re looking for, then Dwyka Tented Camp at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve near Barrydale, 3 hours out of Cape Town, might be just the spot for you… For starters, it is absolutely stunning: a moonscape of indigenous South African flora and fauna set amidst mountains, valleys and craggy peaks.
Don’t let the tented camp bit put you off – this is the most amazing tent you’ll ever stay in. It’s actually part-tent, part-wooden structure, with a massive bedroom, huge bathroom, wooden porch with loungers and a splash pool, all looking out onto the cliffs and dry riverbed for maximum privacy.
The wall-sized windows open out to invite nature in, and there are lovely intimate spots to while away a few hours – on the loungers by the pool, soaking up the sun; in the bath with a cool breeze blowing in the open doors; or reclining on the giant bed, colonial style, on the edge of the wilderness. This is the ultimate in comfort and luxury.
Of course, there’s not too much spare time to while away. This is a game reserve, after all, and between the lavish 3 course meals and the fabulous (and surprisingly comfortable) game drives, there’s no chance you’ll get bored. Especially when the staff are so fabulous, and friendly, and eager to please.
The lodge itself is beautiful – all open spaces and natural rock and wood decor, and you’ll quickly feel right at home. The longer you stay, the more time you’ll have to spend soaking up the ambience (and the views), and because it’s a fair drive from Cape Town it’s probably a good idea to stay at least 2 or 3 nights… Or longer.
The drive itself is simply stunning: 3 beautiful hours along route 60 and then route 62, through Robertson and the Krogmanskloof Pass to Montagu, and beyond. It takes you past the stunning Swartberg range, which looks as if it’s been coloured in with crayons – neon yellows, browns and oranges. A picturesque start to any honeymoon.
And then there’s the game drives, with sundowners and snacks in a spot with a view, and the chance to see big and small game up close and, more importantly, absorb some of the vast knowledge of the guides. Game walks are a speciality here, not only to get up close to some of the animals (including white lions!) but also to find out more about the plants, trees, tracks and spoor of the animals who call the stunning Sanbona reserve home.
And then it’s back to your beautiful tent. Mention you’re on honeymoon and you’ll get extra-special treatment – a candlelit bubble bath with a bottle of chilled bubbly waiting for you, and even (if you’re lucky) a surprise breakfast in the bush after an early morning game walk. Gaze up at the millions of stars at night and you’ll feel as if you’re in the middle of nowhere… with your honey. A magical feeling.
The hardest part about staying at Dwyka Tented Camp, in fact, is saying goodbye… For a magical, middle-of-nowhere adventure honeymoon, give it a try… You won’t be sorry.
Until next time!
