• A year and a half ago my brand-new husband and I had just started our absolutely magical nearly-two-week honeymoon – and we were staying at Nyati Beach Lodge in Vilanculos, Mozambique.

Only, it wasn’t in Vilanculos, but on a private spit of an island in the middle of the most beautiful crystal clear ocean, reachable only by helicopter. Oh yes, we did our honeymoon in style. (In fact, one of my top tips for wedding couples is to make sure you spend as much on your honeymoon as you do on your wedding – it keeps your wedding spending in check, and makes sure you don’t feel resentful and end up without a great honeymoon).

This was the view from the helicopter – simply the most fabulous way to get to your destination! And that water was just as warm and wonderful as it looks…

When we arrived, we were shown to our private bungalow, and presented with a bottle of bubbly to enjoy as the sun went down – this was the view from our verandah. Nyati is relaxed but beautiful – it’s not one of those stuffy, fancy hotels, it’s a resort filled with people who really love what they do and where they do it. This was perfect for us – we’re big on being left alone while we’re on holiday.

So this is pretty much where we spent our days: on the pool deck, sipping litchi margaritas (from a recipe specially imported to the resort by my workmates!) soaking up the utter bliss of nothing to do but unwind, swim, snorkel, nap, walk on the beach, enjoy each other’s company, and feast on seafood…

The view from said pool deck: right in the middle of nowhere. The food was unbelievable, too – giant platters of the most delicious fresh fish and prawns and crayfish, all beautifully presented at different spots around the resort (on our last night we had dinner on that little pier you can see, above, with phosphorence in the water around us and candlelight the only light apart from the stars… Magical!)

We also went on a sunset dhow cruise, just the two of us and the captain of the dhow. They *really* know how to do honeymoons at Nyati – from the bubbly to the chocolates to the rose petals… It was just blissful.

I really couldn’t have wished for a more magical honeymoon… If you’re looking for somewhere only 3 hours from Joburg that feels like a million miles from real life, I highly recommend Nyati Beach Lodge.

    Until next time!
    Muchlove,
    Bridget
