I may well have found the most surprising place to honeymoon in Cape Town: Camps Bay Retreat. I’ve been wanting to go here for absolutely ages, mostly because every time we go to the beach we drive past the sign at the bottom of the property, and I couldn’t understand how somewhere in Camps Bay could have quite that many trees… Little did I know, Camps Bay Retreat is a 4 acre indigenous garden threaded with paths that take you down secret overgrown trails and into hidden garden nooks. Undeniably romantic, and very surprising for Camps Bay! Shall I show you around?
The Manor House is the heart of the property, an antique home that offers warm, cosy opulence in the four bedrooms, with a library, dining room and bar, all warmed up with roaring fires in winter, and cooled down with large French doors out onto the garden in summer.
Find a spot to laze away an afternoon in the library, or stroll over to Deck House – the more summery option, with wide open porches, or The Villa – contemporary, clean bedrooms for those who don’t love the fussiness of antiques.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served in the beautiful dining room, and your tastebuds are in for a treat. The food is all fresh, many of the ingredients picked from the kitchen gardens, and it’s the kind of mouthwatering food that you have to close your eyes to appreciate: perfectly prepared fresh salmon, the most delicious Caprese salad I’ve ever tasted, and steak with a roasted garlic sauce I’m still thinking about!
And then to bed, in our spacious, beautifully appointed room. The small details are simply amazing – from the vintage window fittings to rose petals on our bed at turndown, and even a mini chocolate mousse cake for a late night treat! The fireplace in our room was kept crackling, and we were lucky enough to have an adjoining enclosed balcony in our room – such a wonderful way to wake up in the morning, with a cup of tea, looking out over the ocean and the wide expanse of garden.
Camps Bay Retreat is the perfect spot for a honeymoon – you can walk along the garden trail to Camps Bay beach or take the shuttle to The Bay Hotel (their sister hotel with a beach club across the road from the main beach). Meditate (or swim!) in the natural mountain pool tucked away in the gardens, or take advantage of the on-site spa and the romantic Victorian baths looking out over the indigenous greenery. Or simply feel a million miles from anywhere in this hidden gem of a hotel…
Right in the heart of Camps Bay, but a real retreat for mind and body, you’ll feel as if you’ve been at Camps Bay Retreat for weeks… We did. What a wonderful feeling!
Until next time!
